Liposculpture refers to the surgical contouring of the body using the technique of liposuction. The liposuction surgery involves a gentle and selective removal of fatty deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise.

The liposuction procedure is very straightforward. Tiny incisions are made at the site where fat is to be removed, and a solution is infused to provide anaesthesia, reduce bleeding and improve fat extraction. Hollow tubular instruments of various sizes are used to extract the fat.

The cannula is attached to suction tubing through which the fat is then removed. Knowing how much to leave behind is a guide to how much fat should be removed, and this is a joint decision between the patient and the surgeon; and what is achievable based on the surgeon’s aesthetic judgement and experience.

Laserlipolysis involves liquefying fat with a laser. It is a slow process so the technology is best reserved for small deposits of fat and good skin tone. It also helps to smooth out minor irregularities after previous liposuction.

Another common body shaping procedure is a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty. During tummy tuck surgery, the skin and underlying muscles of the stomach are tightened and repositioned to give a toned, taut and flat stomach that exercise cannot usually provide.

The best candidates for a tummy tuck are patients who are in good shape, but with loose abdominal skin. If there is a large fat accumulation on the abdominal wall, especially along the upper part, liposuction may be required as a primary procedure before tummy tuck surgery  to remove the fatty layer.

A tummy tuck is performed under general anaesthetic. The most common technique used involves an incision made across the lower abdomen, extending to the hip on each side. The vertical muscles are tightened by pulling them close together and stitching them into position. Extra skin and fat is also removed.
